The good news is that hyperbaric
medicine may help you or a loved one get over an illness at some point in your
lives. The bad news is that most medical patients and many physicians are unaware
of this insurance-approved treatment modality. As the founder and CEO of the
Life Support Technologies group (LST) -- a hyperbaric medicine and life safety
engineering company that provides services in nine hospitals in the NY-NJ-CT
region – I am reminded and challenged every day by this knowledge gap that so
often compromises care. So, what is hyperbaric medicine and how does this
unique therapy work?
Hyperbaric medicine entails
placing a patient in a specially designed pressure vessel known as a hyperbaric
chamber, and increasing the atmospheric pressure while the patient breathes
pure oxygen. Medical benefits of hyperbaric treatment are well-documented and can
include faster wound healing, increased tissue oxygenation, enhanced immune
system function, infection-fighting, and helping force new blood vessel growth within
injured tissue.
Most people think of carbon
monoxide poisoning or divers suffering from decompression illness (the “bends”)
as the only uses for hyperbaric oxygen therapy. However, the treatment of
non-healing wounds is the most prevalent indication for the use of hyperbaric oxygen
therapy. The U.S. government’s Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS)
cover fifteen different conditions for which hyperbaric medicine is either the
primary or an adjunctive treatment; most private insurance companies follow
CMS’ lead. For a complete list of indications, click here: http://www.lifesupport-usa.com/treatment_indications.htm
