Careers for Hyperbaric Technicians

.
For more options with your healthcare career, you may want to add the dynamic and growing field of hyperbaric medicine to your skills and resume.  Hyperbaric Medicine is a growing field that goes hand-in-glove with Wound Care, another expanding specialty.  Hyperbaric treatment involves putting a patient in a pressurized environment known as a hyperbaric chamber and having them breathe 100% oxygen.  The most numerous type of chamber is designed for a single patient and is known as a monoplace chamber.  Multiplace chambers are purpose-built and can accommodate as many patients as they are built for.  At least one healthcare professional accompanies and assists the patients in a multiplace chamber.

In order to work with patients in the hyperbaric medical field, you will need a qualifying medical profession.  The National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT) is the Board that certificates Hyperbaric Technologists (CHT).  Physicians earn CMEs through either the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medical Society (UHMS) or the American College of Hyperbaric Medicine (ACHM).

The following list of qualifying medical professions, are taken from the NBDHMT’s “Certified Hyperbaric Technologist Resource Manual – July 2012”
  • Respiratory Therapist
  • Physician Assistant
  • Military Corpsman
  • EMT/Paramedic
  • Registered Nurse or LPN
  • Nurse Practitioner
  • Physician
  • Certified Nurse Aide
  • Certified Medical Assistant
  • Physiologist
  • Others, upon application to the Board (case by case)

You can download the resource manual at the following Link:

You’ll need a combination of skills to work with hyperbaric patients, including basic clinical and hyperbaric medicine knowledge, as well as good people skills.  If you also have computer skills with word processing and spreadsheet programs and are not intimidated by data entry requirements for a hospital Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system you have an excellent footing for work as a hyperbaric technologist.  Additionally, if you have administrative and managerial skills your hyperbaric career may shine brightly.
